Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled "Massacre of Wyoming" dated 1866. Depicts the Battle of Wyoming, July 3, 1778, fought between Patriots and Loyalist accompanied by Iroquois raiders. In the forefront of the image an Iroquois warrior prepares to scalp a man. Nearby, a warrior wielding a hatchet chases an injured man. Engraved from the original painiting by Alonzo Chappel in possession of the publisher.
