Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled "Battle of Shiloh, Tenn., Charge of General Grant" dated 1863. Depicts Union and Confederate forces during the Battle of Shiloh, April 6-7,1862. In the center of the image two soliders on horsback clash swords. On the left, a solider carrying a tattered Union flag falls to the ground. Engraved by W.
