Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled "Battle of Gettysburg, PA" dated 1865. Depicts a view of a Union field artillery battery, during the battle of Gettysburg, July 1-3, 1863. In the foreground the bodies of two Union soliders lay on the ground, behind them an officer on horseback directs the attention of a solider to something in the distance.
