Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Certificate from the Paymaster General's Office. It is addressed to Mary A. Rifenburgh of Germantown, NY. It entitles her to a total of $112.96 in pension in 8 installments worth $14.12 each. To do so was required by an act of Congress on April 10, 1869.
