Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One trading card from the Red Menace collection, "36. Commander in Korea" depicting a portrait of Matthew B. Ridgway. Reverse side contains propaganda narrative describes the accomplishments of Lieutenant General Matthew B. Ridgway as the replacement for General Walton. Noted for heading the preparation of a 3.5-inch bazooka, and his involvement as a general during World War II.

Matthew Ridgway served during World War II in commanding positions and as the 19th Chief of Staff of the United States Army. After the unexpected death of Lieutenant General Walton Walker, Ridgway took over command of the 8th Army in Korea.
