Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A mandate of payment for M. Boutin for the work of his slave Sam. Sam worked on the public chain gang for twenty one days at the rate of twenty five cents a day. The payment from the city to M. Boutin is for "Five Piastres Twenty-Five Cents". The document is written in French, but is accompanied by a translation.
