Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Receipt from Wilhelm and Jan Willink of Amsterdam, owing 2000 florins to Cohen. Signed by Cohen on verso. Signature of Anthony Wayne crossed out on front. Spelled Wilhem and Ian in this letter.

"Mad" Anthony Wayne was a Revolutionary war general, and a congressman.
Wilhelm and Jan Willink were trustees of the Holland Land Company which was involved in a giant land speculation scheme in New York State.
