Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Partially printed document signed by Perez Morton as deputy secretary of the council. Other signers include members of the Massachusetts Bay Council: W. Severs, W. Spooner, J. Palmero, John Taylor, Charles Chauncy, Moses Gill, John Whitcomb, Jedediah Forster, Michael Farley, James Prescott, John Winthrop, B. White, Eliad Taylor, Jabez Fisher, and Dr. Samuel Holten. Appoints Southworth a captain in regiment commanded by Colonel Lemuel Robinson "raised by the Colony to reinforce the American Army untill" 1 April 1776. Includes a paper seal of the 1775 Massachusetts Bay Colony.
