Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written and signed for Henry Knox by Shaw, Knox's aide-de-camp. Includes information pertaining to Colonel [Clement] Biddle's regiment for 16 December 1776. Date of creation based on a previously inferred date written in pencil near the top of the page.

Knox was appointed Major General after the 1781 Battle of Yorktown.
