Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Marked as "an Exact Copy." Signed by Woodruff 1 September 1777. Lists sergeants, corporals, matrosses, gunners, bombardiers, and drum and fifes. Includes comments, time of enlistment, and place of appointment. On verso, contains "Proof of Effectives" chart, noting officers present and absent. Lieutenants Eli Elmor and David Moore sign, certifying the authenticity of the chart. Colonel Richard Humpton, commander of the Second Brigade of General Benjamin Lincoln's Division, signs 3 September 1777.
