Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Most letters written to his wife, Dolly Davis. Letters describe the soldiers' poor health and living conditions in the camps. Briefly mentions the First Battle of Murfreesboro fought in Rutherford County, Tennessee. Draft transcripts available.

Samuel H. Davis enlisted as a 2nd Lieutenant. He was commissioned into "A" Co. MS 35th Infantry. Dates are not provided. Davis was killed at Corinth, Mississippi 3 October 1862, possibly in the Battle of Corinth.
