Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Mentions a battle being fought in Murfreesborough (likely referring to the First Battle of Murfreesboro, fought on 13 July 1862 in Rutherford County, Tennessee), the number prisoners taken and the amount of damages is noted. Portions of the document have been damaged and mended causing text loss. A draft transcript is available.
