Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Gulston, Jackson, & St[adt] sent the letter per Captain Hayman, and ask Robert Jr. to assist him in the disposal of his cargo, to procure wheat and other provisions at a good price for him, and also to provide the Captain with whatever goods and money he may require. Docketed on address leaf.
