At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Hendrick Hansen, the son of Robert, Jr.'s sister Alida, writes his uncle to declare his devotion to him, and to state his wish that Robert, Jr. will "further and promote" his education. He also sends his blessing for the New Year.

Honoured Uncle,
Being in the Ties of nature and Duty bound to Accost you on the present Season of the year, I humbly begg Leave to Present you with this Epistle, as the fruits of my Labour, hoping the same may meet with your paternall Countenance, as hitherto unto me Sensibly Sherved far Exceeding my desertes.
And therefore with Gods grace I hope to be able to Present you with better pieces of my Stuty in Time, which God willing shall not be Wanting in me, Nor do I doubt in the Least in you to further and Promote my Education, which is the only Qualification And Step to Raise a Man to Honour in this World.
Now Hoping that your happiness - May End with your days and that this New Year may Prove a Sensible Token thereof Are the Sincere Wishes of Who Respectfully Am
