Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to Captain Bryant about administrative matters related to the account of "James Melvin late a Matross in Colo. [John] Crane's Regiment" who desired pay for his service while stationed under Bryant's command in 1782-1783. Written from the War Department's "Accountants Office." Free frank signed by William Simmons, handwritten "Free" and stamped "Free" on address leaf.

Simmons was an accountant in the War Department in the 1790s.
Captain John Bryant was the Deputy Commissary of Military Stores at the Armory in Springfield, Massachusetts.
