Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Downing agrees to pay a debt of twelve hundred and sixty pounds in 1694. Court clerk Edwin Thacker certifies that "the above bill was proved to be the Act and deed of Wm Downing by the oaths of the evidences." Also signed by Robert Williams and Edward Williamson with their marks, as witnesses.
