Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Printed map detailing the battleground of 18 and 21 July 1861 at the Battle of First Manassas (Bull Run). Includes major roads and railroads, showing Washington D.C. on the right side. Contains descriptive text beneath the map. At the bottom is a manuscript note in pencil noting that the (unknown) writer forgot to enclose this map with a letter. It also discusses various supplies, including shirts and blankets. Printed by the Richmond Enquirer, engraved and drawn by Baumgarten.
