Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

"Funds have been transmitted you to carry into effect the treaty with the Chickasaw Nation of the 30th of December 1815, and also for the payment of the annuity due them under that treaty for 1817...." Sherburne, a Rhode Island native, was appointed Chicasaw agent in December 1817.
