Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Page 1, which is dated 5 March 1753, notes that he has shipped sixteen barrels of bread to Barbados on board the Rebecca, a ship under the command of James Lowther. The shipment is consigned to Jonathan and John Mifflan. Exact title reads "Saml Masseys version book."
