Title: [Diary of James Hannegan of the 5th Ohio Cavalry]

Diary is an autograph manuscript signed, neatly written in pencil, covering 1 January 1862-31 December 1862. Writes about the battle being raged at Fort Donelson in his entry of 15 February, reporting that the "citizens are in a terrible state of excitement in regard to the battle now raging at Fort Donelson. The news so far is favorable to the success of the Union forces & no doubt is entertained as to the ultimate result of the contest. This is regarded as the most important battle which has occurred during the war.

Describes activity at Fort Donelson (the Battle of Fort Donelson was fought from 11 February to 16 February 1862), Yorktown (Siege of Yorktown took place from 5 April to 4 May 1862, as part of the Peninsula Campaign), the Peninsula Campaign withdrawal (March through July 1862), Second Bull Run (28-30 August 1862), and South Mountain (Battle of South Mountain was fought on 14 September 1862), and being wounded by a cannonball. This cannonball is found in GLC04564.02.

Incomplete manuscript of Fox's memoirs. Chronicles his time in the Union Army from when he joined "Balcom's 'six-foot company" in Binghamton, New York in September 1861until the Battle of Cedar Mountain in August 1862. He was wounded later that month.

Collection of Frank C. Stout (full name Benjamin Franklin Christian Stout) of the 129th Pennsylvania Volunteers, a nine month regiment. Collection includes two diaries, both of which are signed and primarily written in pencil. The first diary is approximately 140 pages and covers August-December 1862. The second diary is approximately 193 pages and covers December 1862-May 1863. Housed with the second diary is an unused postage stamp.

Henry Cook writes daily entries on camp life, including rations, illness, gambling, picket duty, construction projects, pay, and promotions. He includes information on military actions (battles at Fort Donelson, Fort Macon, and [Pea?] Ridge), as well as on desertion, scouting expeditions, contrabands, weapon distribution, and spies. His daily entries, written in ink, inlcude brief weather reports, and each month ends with a slightly longer reflection.
