Discusses business transactions dealing with various amounts of money. $20,000 and $5,000 are needed "to complete the payment which will become due in sixty days after the survey shall be notified; and upon the puctuality of which, the validity of the agreement with the state will most materially depend." Goes on to write about further payments which are due and a difficult situation with William Duer concerning a purchase of land. Content suggests Henry Knox as the author and was previously assessed as such. Light water damage as blurred some lines in the lower left corner.

In the first correspondence, dated 12 September 1792, Duer writes to Jackson and Flint discussing a contract he drew up for Knox involving land deals between Knox, Roche and Leval.

Discusses Knox's situation with [William] Duer and Madam de Leval over land negotiations. States Duer has given him Knox's obligation to convey to Duer a certain proposition on a township. Asks that Knox informs him when he is ready to make the final conveyance. Also notes Leval's concern over the Committee delaying the meeting regarding her land claims. Says if this happens some of the Germans who Leval has sold land to plan on attending the meeting. Date taken from docket. "Free" stamped on address leaf with no signature.

Marked "Confidential." Apologizes for not answering Knox's letter sooner. Discusses his difficulty in keeping to his part of the contract with Knox. Is unable to find funds to buy a tract of land. Describes his circumstances and why he is unable to buy the land as he had hoped. Also discusses his future and the likelihood of his imprisonment and the effect it will have on his family.

Two parts. First part is addressed to Benjamin Walker and discusses a deed to land. Notes he received Walker's letter pertaining to the St. Lawrence lands. Mentions he has repeatedly asked Duer for copies of several notes but that Duer has been unable to locate them. Also discusses Madam de Leval's intention of applying to the Massachusetts Legislature regarding her land claim. Believes if that were to happen the contract will likely be lost. Second part is a copy of a receipt written in Knox's hand from William Duer. Confirms Duer's receipt of money from Knox.

Informs Jackson that Henry Knox has agreed to give Madame de Leval and Mr. de la Roche deeds for portions of Trenton and "No. 8" (both in present-day Maine). Instructs Jackson, "To enable her further to place the Germans, you will assist her to take possession of no. 15." States that Leval and de la Roche are not to make any application to the State without consulting Knox and Duer. Written in Henry Jackson's hand and marked as a copy.

Agreement with Duer where Duer will sell "all [the] original rights in the province of maine lands" to Knox. Duer will be paid $50,000 in three annual installments, and he will receive the bonds of William Green, Knox, and Shaw and Randall. Signature has been struck. Contains an autograph note signed by Knox on the address leaf stating that the agreement was cancelled 20 December 1792 by virtue of an agreement between Duer, William Bingham, and Henry Knox.

Expresses his approval that Knox has finally bought out William Duer's portion of the Maine land and asks for a copy of the agreement. Encloses a copy of a letter he received from Duer, stating that he will wait for further instructions from Knox before he does anything about Duer's letter. Says that Captain [John] Hills, a surveyor working for Knox, will travel to Philadelphia the following day. Discusses Knox's canal project, noting that Hills could not finish his survey due to the bad weather.

Discusses concerns about an agreement with Mr. [William] Green: "As Mr Green has not to my knowledge any great fixed property in this Country, and as he objects to any guarantee of his bonds, although going abroad, an apprehension is excited in my mind that by some fatal accidents, I may have parted with the property and yet have the bonds to pay." Relates that he requested a legal agreement from Green to protect his rights, ensuring Green will continue to make payments on the bonds while in Europe (GLC02437.05675). Discusses potential consequences if Green refuses.
