Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Also signed by John Hesse and one other, whose name is illegible. One of the signatories is possibly the secretary for General Thomas Gore, for it is noted that this document is to be filed in his offices. At the time of the document's creation Egremont was Secretary of State for the Southern Department.
