Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Marked "copy." Writes, "All Issuing Commissaries are hereby directed to request the Commanding Officers of Regiments, Detachments, and Smaller Parties, to make regular Returns on clear paper, and large enough to take proper receipts thereon." Adds, "Received of the Contractors for the moving Army, one hundred Rations in full of all species for the above Return."
