Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed by Major Samuel Shaw as Major General Henry Knox's aide-de-camp, who stated the document was created "By order of the Comdt." Also signed by Captain Ezra Selden as the commander of the Main Guard and by Colonel Crain. Endorsed by a person named Knapp (the first name is illegible).
