At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

My dear sir,
I beg leave to introduce to your acquaintance my good friend Colonel Humphreys who was in the Army from the commencement to the close of the War, and a very considerable portion of the time in the family of the Commander in chief. In every instance his merit has been uniformly conspicuous[.] The General and other principal officers have in consequence been warmly attached to him. The Congress have by their present appointment shown their confidence in his talents and knowledge of [illegible]
