Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Possibly in the hand of Philip Audibert. This document provides salary information for the War Department from January-March 1793. The 10 employees made $1,762.22. Knox as the Secretary of War made $750 for the quarter. Page 2 was written on 2 April and has the signatures of 9 employees of the War Department, stating they received their salary. Only Knox's signature is absent.
