Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Document announcing the 11 employees of the War Department received their pay for the last quarter of 1793. Each person signed his name that he received pay, except for David Henley, Benjamin Betterton, and Stephen Hills. The pay of the last two was "not allowed." Total payments for the quarter's salaries was $949.99. The document is in the handwriting of paymaster James Henry Laugier (see GLC02437.06004 for a reference to Laugier's title).
