Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes that he must bring a lawsuit against Knox because he is the endorser of a note of William Bingham's. Declares that he has always respected Knox, but believes Bingham's behavior to be "shameful," having "not paid the least regard to his word, or promise." Explains his attempts to collect payment and Bingham's refusal to pay. Assures Knox that all attempts will be made to carry on this suit in a respectful, dignified manner.
