Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Thompson, a Brigadier General in the Missouri State Guard, writes to General Ruggles: "Can you inform me the custom in the case of an Officer resigning who has never received his commission, but who has been duly elected and served for several months?- or in the case where a man is undoubtedly and confusedly incompetent to perform the duties devolving upon him- Such is the case of one of my Captains and he is as anxious to resign, as his men and myself are anxious that he should."
