Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Brandt Schuyler to Robert Livingston dated January 19, 1682. Schuyler informs Livingston about the purchase of the Pollepees Island by Courtlandt, who was promised the island by Captain Brock and his council. Schuyler also discusses the prices of flour in Barbados and wheat in Long Island. Written in Dutch.
