Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Indicates that he received Captain Bryant's letter, in which he mentioned that Bryant wrote to Henry Knox about Ingersoll (possibly regarding Ingersoll's pay), and expresses disappointment in learning that he will not receive any money while on furlough. Asks for money closing with an exhortation to "think of me as I am much in want of friend in which I can carry in my pocket."

Captain John Bryant was the Deputy Commissary of Military Stores at the Armory in Springfield, Massachusetts.
