Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A print of a photograph taken of a group of Union Army officers taken in September 1863. Major General William H. French stands fifith from the left among his 3rd Corps staff officers (10 standing and four seated, not counting French). In 1864, the 3rd Corps was reorganized and amalgamated with the 2nd Corps, while French himself was mustered out of active service. Graphie inscription on rear: "Genl. French & staff." Unmounted.
