Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A print of a photograph of General Ambrose Burnside and his staff in 1862. A wood carving copy of this photograph was printed in Harper's Weekly on July 23rd, 1864. Graphite inscriptions on verso: "Burnside, Hancock" and "9333." Brigadier General John Buford is standing last on the right.
