One undated photograph of Major General Alexander McDowell McCook taken by Mathew Brady.

Commanded the 20th Corps at Chickamauga. During the battle, he and his Corps were cut off from the rest of the army in a Confederate thrust through the Union line. McCook fled the battlefield in route with two of his divisions. His fleeing caused him never to be given a chance to lead troops in battle again, and in 1866 was demoted to captain.
