Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

"Union Martyrs." Maquette of 17 trimmed CDVs of Union Generals killed in the Civil War, mounted on board (as a maquette) for reproduction by photographic studio. Attributed to Brady studio by previous owner. Each mounted with a white curling border, and each with the general's name written in ink.
