Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Amusing personal letter written on mourning stationery, concerning his recent trip to New York and Brooklyn. He writes that since he has been free of work for the last year, he can be considerably more genial. "Few of the newspaper writers seem to get on to the fact that a poor ass, that is carrying three loads, cannot be expected to be as frisky as a ... colt."
