At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Annapolis, Feb. 29, 1784
Dear Sir

Your favor of the 23d inst. came safely by the last post. Your correspondent of Charles town informed you so long ago that accommodation had taken place between the Russian &Turks was a better prophet than historian. The fact then I believe, but there are hopes it is so information from our ministers on this tell me he has it from one who has that the mediation of France and great sacrifices by the Turks, for being so weak & defenceless [sic]

Therefore my next may tell you that we have done, and not merely what we had to do, which, such is the present barrenness of the time, is really the most copious source of information at this time. mr. Adams & mr. Jay have some how or other got themselves over to London. Their reception was not a kind one by any means and they must have at this faux gas pas, as their friends here have been. with my materials after wishing you much the esteem with which I am, Dr. Sir
