Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Contains a letter to friends at the quarterly and monthly meetings in Great Britain and Ireland, and another letter to friends at their yearly meeting in Philadelphia. Both letters guide the conduct of Quakers, and encourage "the continuance of your endeavors for the relief of the poor opressed Africans..." Written in the fifth Quaker month.
