At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Anderson, a British Naval surgeon during the American Revolution, writes to his wife about naval engagements, his travel to the West Indies, her access to money, their correspondence, and his affection for her. Also discusses news of "the capitulation of Cornwallis" at Yorktown. Expresses his desire that "this winter will bring about a Peace. for it is every ones Opinion here, that America is lost to Great Brittain and must obtain its Independence."
