At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Accompanied by a letter of K.G. Ordway, the ribbon's designer and Sergeant at Arms of the House, to Orlando Kellogg, enclosing the ribbon and explaining that it was designed for members of Congress and how to wear it. Also accompanied by a signed card of George T. Brown, Sergeant at Arms of the Senate, permitting Kellogg and family. Dated April 15, 1865 - 29 July 1865.
