Describes the atmosphere in Baltimore, telling his sister that "the Military Authorities are throwing up Earthworks all around the city. Now seizing every Nigger they find on the streets and sending them out to work on the entrenchements." Informs her that they now have over 200 patients in the hospital, and he recently saw in the papers that the Rebels are near the Capital.
