Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Published by Derby & Jackson. Signed by Julia E. M. Hodge on the inner front cover. Also contains inscription related to Sheridan Edward Mott: "Young, handsome, brave and intellectual he gave his life in the war of the Rebellion. Shot Sep. 20 1863 in the battle of Chickamauga... " Mott was 21 years old when he died.
