Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Also titled "Baltimore Democracy and Independent Democracy." In closing, Chase indicates his wish "...that the Ohio Democracy might maintain firmly and fearlessly their own noble creed; and that, hereafter, the action of the Ohio Democracy might correspond with their high profession." Bound with string. The actual letter was written in Cincinnati, Ohio in November 1853; location and date of publication not included.

Chase was a Senator from Ohio 1849-1855 and 1861-1862. He served as Secretary of the Treasury under Abraham Lincoln. Alfred Peck Edgerton was a Representative from Ohio 1851-1854.
