At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Published by the Houghton Mifflin Company and The Riverside Press Cambridge of Cambridge, Massachusetts. Details the life of Abraham Lincoln. Divided into sections based on time and location. Beveridge meant this work to be a companion to his book, The Life of John Marshall, where he chronicles the history of the United States through the life of a historical figure. With both works, Beveridge covers the history of America from colonial days to the end of the Civil War. In volume one, the first two pages are glued together at the bottom, and the right edge of the first four pages in the works cited section are uncut. Navy blue covers with stamped gold lettering on the spine and front cover. Sewn binding.

Beveridge was a Republican Senator from Indiana who served from 1899-1910. He won a Pulitzer Prize for his previous work, The Life of John Marshall.
