Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

"If Whitfield is to be ousted because he was not elected in pursuance of any valid law, upon what principle can Reeder be put in by this House, when in his case there was neither law nor votes... It is the principle of all tyrannies, and the beginning of all usurpations; but I will not permit myself to believe that this House will commit such an outrage."
