Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Also signed by William Pitkin. Pitkin and Huntington signed as Assistants. Addressed to John Lawrence, Treasurer. Orders to pay Fritch, Sheriff of New Haven County, four pounds from the treasury of the state of Connecticut for tending to the general assembly and distributing laws and proclamations of the past year. Note on verso signed by Fritch certifies that he received payment 9 May 1777.

Huntington was a signer of the Declaration of Independence, a delegate to the Continental Congress from Connecticut 1775-1784, and the president of the Continental Congress 1779-1781.
