Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Reply to letter of condolence for Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany. Expresses self-pity and adds an inspirational poem (page 2). Sees this as a pilgrimage to inner strength. Written on Windsor Castle black-bordered stationery. Leopold, Queen Victoria's youngest son, died of hemophilia at the age of 30.
