Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Sending Pringle his book on the life of Robert Burns. Cunningham advises him to ignore what the critics have said. Date inferred from publication of the single volume "The works of Robert Burns," published 1840. Recipient inferred from partially clipped salutation. Cunningham's father was a neighbor of Burns.

Burns was a Scottish poet who wrote "Auld Lang Syne." Thomas Pringle was a Scottish abolitionist and poet. Cunningham was a Scottish poet.
