Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Watson, the antiquarian and author, orders copies of his own book, Annals of Philadelphia (1830). Orders one copy of the book History of Enthusiasm (possibly A Natural History of Enthusiasm, 1830). Includes a brief biographical note on Watson written in pencil at the bottom of the page.
