Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Seated left-facing portrait of Johnson. Behind his chair is a small covered table with a book and piece of paper. Engraving based on a painting by Alonzo Chappel, who in turn used a photograph. By the lower left corner "Painted by" and on the lower right "Alonzo Chappel." Printed signature below image with "Likeness from a recent Photgraph from life." Noted at the bottom of the page as "Entered according to act of Congress A. D. 1864 by Johnson Fry & Co - in the clerks office of the district court of the souther district of N.Y."
